New Technology Supports English Language Learners

OCSB educators are always seeking new ideas and tools to support student learning. We’re excited to be the second school board in Canada to implement a digital platform called Binogi. This resource offers Math, Science, and Geography content using videos 3-5 minutes long and available in multiple languages.

In February 2022, we began a pilot study of Binogi in grade 7-10 math and science classes in four high schools. The videos available on the platform are an engaging animated way to teach content to all students, particularly our multilingual learners. Early English Language Learners (ELLs) must use their first language to develop critical thinking skills. Binogi makes it easy for students to switch between languages and review the topic by watching the video more than once.

Students can access the Binogi at home as well as in school. Doing this allows them to sit with their parent at home and learn with family. It opens up an opportunity to speak in their home language and explain or get feedback from a parent about their learning. Parents can become more involved with their child’s school work despite language barriers.
Feedback on the pilot was very positive from both educators and students. Although Binogi was initially designed to support ELLs, educators found it to be an excellent tool for all learners in the classroom. The platform also contains built-in quizzes that teachers can use to receive quick learning assessments and know what each student understands and which information needs to be revisited.

Following the pilot’s success, teachers in grades 7-9 in all our high schools have begun regularly using Binogi for mathematics, science, and geography lessons. The platform is helping to make learning equitable and inclusive for all students.
