In the 2021-2022 school year, our English As A Second Language (ESL), Language Instruction For Newcomers To Canada (LINC), and Adult Learning & Skills Development programs saw a gradual increase in enrollment as pandemic restrictions lessened, and many courses returned to in-person learning.
For the first time, we ran Summer ESL Night Classes and a Summer ESL Program at St. Pius X High School; both programs were successful. We provided students in the Adult Programs with borrowed electronic devices to support effective learning.
One of our Night Class students at St. Patrick’s Adult School took courses to pass the Government English Test – she did! Her success resulted in her getting hired by the Federal Government.
Our community partnerships continue supporting our Adult Learners in the 2021-2022 school year, including partnering with the Catholic Centre for Immigrants, OCISO, St. Lawrence College, and Pinecrest-Queensway Employment Ontario Services as other local agencies.
In-person celebrations returned for our Adult Learners. Graduates participated in special ceremonies recognizing their hard-earned success, including students in the LINC Home-Based Business For Women Entrepreneurs. Those in attendance included two representatives from Immigration, Citizenship, and Refugees Canada, Ben Vallati, Superintendent of Continuing & Community Education, and members of our OCSB team. Graduation ceremonies were also held for LINC Office & Accounting Careers For Newcomers and our ESL Child Care Worker Certificate Program, where OCSB Trustee Cindy Simpson attended and honoured the graduates.
OCSB Adult Programs continue to innovate and help Adult Learners be successful in pathways toward adult high school, post-secondary education, employment, and entrepreneurship.
