Before the Lenten season, Monsignor Paul Baxter Catholic Elementary School students were learning about what it means to be global citizens and how they can make a difference world-wide and around the corner.
Students understood that global citizenship is not measured in kilometers; instead, it’s defined by connection. With that in mind, students, staff, and the school community decided to help those facing food insecurity close to home in Barrhaven and around the globe in Mikinduri, Kenya.
Students chose to support Kenya’s Miurine Primary School. The school is well known for its academic performance. But despite its success, students often go hungry. They travel several kilometers to school on foot, and when they do get to school, they sit four or five students at a desk. The monies raised went to food supplies, desks, chairs, and wiring for electricity.
Locally the school community conducted a food drive for the Barrhaven Food Cupboard, a community-led, non-profit charitable organization that provides food and necessities for those in need.
Deep Learning combined with our Gospel values, and the Spiritual Theme of Gratitude is the foundation of these Lenten projects.
